Scaling a Service Company: The Gaps FN Left Open
I've been on Field Nation since 2011 and running as a Service Company since 2018, mostly doing the work myself. I'm now exploring building out the managed-provider side to actually scale, so I sat the on-boarding webinar to get the lay of it and submitted questions. Sharing what I asked, the answers I got, and the four gaps still open, because those gaps are exactly where scaling gets real.
Straight talk on the class, because sugarcoating it helps nobody. It ran under thirty minutes off a script that got read start to finish. The Q&A answers came back canned and generic, and in a few cases didn't answer what was actually asked. When I tried to follow up and get past the surface, the session ended cold. No back-and-forth, no follow-up. I came in ready to invest real effort into growing my business here and walked out with less than ten minutes in the Help Center would have given me.
For the single biggest step FN asks a provider to make, going from solo to running a team, that is a letdown. A scripted half hour isn't on-boarding, it's a formality.
Anyone weighing this move deserves a live session with real people answering real questions, and right now that isn't what's on offer.
Here's what I asked and the answers I got:
- What if my state doesn't require workers comp?
Answer: FN recommends all techs carry Workers' Comp or Occupational Accident Insurance. You upload your state's exemption form under account settings, or default to FN's per-work-order OAI fee. - Best way to add a provider I'd like to route work to?
Answer: For an independent tech, search their User ID, add them to a custom Talent Pool under Workforce, and route to that pool or ID. For a tech under your umbrella, Company Settings, Managed Providers, Add Managed Provider. - Why does my company rating show provider ratings and completed work when I haven't launched a WO on FN directly?
Answer: FN automatically aggregates the past ratings and completed work of every managed provider linked to your company into the company's collective record. - How do I best connect with buyers and primes to get routed and dispatched work?
Answer: Fully complete the company profile with coverage zones and certifications, and expand your radius and work types to get matched with more. - What if I don't want to give a provider FN access but still want to get them work?
Answer: You can manage their account on their behalf, but they still need a Managed Provider profile, even if they never log in.
Those answers were fine as far as they went. But every one of them stops right where scaling starts. Here's where I still need real-world input from Service Companies who've built a bench past just themselves:
- When you add new managed providers who have no history, does it pull down an established company score, or does your own track record hold it up? How fast does a new provider start moving the company number?
- If you use Report Problem, "I can't make my assignment," to come off a job, does that hit your Backout Score as a provider backout, or is it treated as a buyer-side removal? Big difference for anyone protecting a clean record.
- When two of your managed providers legitimately work one site, how do you structure it? The order has one provider of record, but the policy is that everyone on site has to be a listed provider. How are you handling that in practice?
- When you route to an independent tech through a Talent Pool instead of bringing them under your umbrella, does all the pay and rating stay with them, with nothing rolling up to your company? Trying to understand which way to build the bench.
If you've scaled a Service Company past yourself, I'd value hearing how these actually played out. Reply with the number.
