Q: How long have you been working in the IT field service industry?
A: I first engaged with computer science and technology in the early 1990s, during middle and high school—the era when 3.5-inch floppy disks were dominant. In 1999, I enlisted in the Marine Corps, specializing in communications and electronics. My service included specialized communications on 2 separate 6 month deployments with units in support of Marine Special Operations Command in Kosovo and Albania with various T1 units, as well as deployments to Cuba and Kuwait/Iraq after 9/11 with 2nd Marines in early 2003 under stop loss.
After leaving the military in mid 2003, I joined a Police Department in the city of Atlanta in late 2003. But because I'm techie at heart; I concurrently, leveraged family ties to the IBEW, working part-time doing low-voltage electrical. To formalize my skills, I attended a trade school, earning several CompTIA certifications and an Associate's Degree through a NCCER "Electronics Systems Technician" program.
Upon graduating in late 2005, I left police work to launch the initial version of my company. Again, concurrently I continued my formal education, where I later went on to start my MBA in Technology Management.  My initial business venture lasted until 2011, when personal circumstances required its dissolution.Â
I then worked for AT&T in various roles from 2011 to 2017; while simultaneously acting as shop steward for CWA.
Since late 2017, I have been running the current, successful iteration of my company, providing expertise in IT, Electronics, and Low-Voltage Electrical services
Q: What types of work do you do on Field Nation, and what kinds of projects do you enjoy the most?
A: My company specializes in Low-Voltage Electrical, IT, and Electronic Systems. We often find it easier to list what we don't do rather than what we do! To be clear, we do not do fire or burglar alarm systems or printers; everything else is within our scope.Â
Personally, I prioritize taking on work that is both logically sound and contributes to a healthy bottom line.
Q: What's one piece of advice you'd give to other providers on how to be successful?
A: Often I share with both my business and trades students; as well as those I mentor in business: chase mastery, and all else will find you.
